Singer and songwriter Calum Scott, who rose to fame after his stint in 2015's Britain's Got Talent, is an openly gay man.

He publicly came out of the closet on National Coming Out Day in 2018, sharing his touching story through a YouTube video.

In the 4-minute-long video, Scott revealed that he first opened up to his best friend, who, after knowing the truth, kept his distance from the singer. He kept losing friends and experienced loneliness and confusion.

It's painful to watch people walk away from you as if you have done something wrong. And to me, it felt like a punishment for something that I could not control.

The 'You Are The Reason' singer further shared that opening up to his mother was "one of the most terrifying things" he had ever done in his life. He was scared of her reaction, but to his surprise, his mother accepted him as nothing had changed.

Like finding a needle in a haystack, Scott also found a way to overcame his loneliness and confusion. He believes music helped him express his honesty and enjoy the way he is.

Therefore, the 32-year-old singer felt that becoming a part of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015 gave him the courage to tell his story and a platform to grow.

I found the courage to be honest and I found that courage through music. I found answers to questions that I was too afraid to ask and the courage to tell my story.

Scott now feels the responsibility to inspire people to talk about themselves by starting the "right kind of conversations" with the help of his music.

"I know that there are people young and old struggling with the same questions, and living with that relentless fear and heartbreak. I make the music I do because I want to inspire the right kind of conversations," the singer stated in the video.

He added, "If one less kid can grow up without hiding who they are along the way or having to believe that who they love is something that will make them lonely, then everything I went through will be worth it."

Speaking of kids, the 'Dancing On My Own' singer shared that he has got in him to be a dad during an interview with Attitude magazine in November 2018. He expressed that he would love to raise a baby of his own.

I’ve got it in me to be a dad, and I think I would love to just care and raise a child. Maybe a couple.

He further hinted that he was single at that time and needed to find a partner first to start a family. He said, "It’s always going to be a goal. I’m far too busy."

In the past, Scott had dated both men and women, including singer Sam Smith.
