Khalifa was born Cameron Jibril Thomaz on September 8, 1987, in Minot, North Dakota, to military parents. This meant that young Khalifa lived in different parts of the world, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

After his parents divorced, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his mother in 1996 and completed his education at Taylor Allderdice High School.

Khalifa was only 15 when he first tried his hands on music. His frequent visits to a studio called I.D. Labs earned him impressive reputations from the executives, as they allowed him to record his music for free.

He introduced himself by his name stage name, Wisdom Khalifa. Khalifa means success and is derived from Arabic. The rapper later shortened the 'Wisdom' in his name to Wiz.

The rapper released his debut album, Show and Prove in 2006, and signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2007.

Khalifa's music earned him a reputation from the local audience, but he struggled to establish himself as a mainstream artist. All that changed with the release of his single in 2010 named 'Black and Yellow' that blew up overnight and even reached No.1 on Billboard Hot 100. 

The single was the lead track of his third studio album and remained at No.2 on Billboard 200 chart. After that, he made popular rap albums like O.N.I.F.C. (2012) and Blacc Hollywood (2014), which made him a household name in the world of hip hop and pop music. 

The musician was also appointed to write and record for the soundtrack of Fast and Furious 7. He debuted with the track 'Go Hard or Go Home' alongside rapper Iggy Azalea before earning his reputation for 'See You Again' featuring singer Charlie Puth.

The latter served as a tribute to late actor Paul Walker and peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
