Mara, who rose to fame with her role in 2011's thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has worked in notable projects such as Side Effects, Her, and Carol.
She has been in a relationship with Phoenix since late 2016. The pair shares a son named River, born in September 2020.
But the casting team of the film reportedly finalized Gaga to play the role, going against the will of the movie's lead actor.
Fans React to the News
As soon as the unofficial news made it to social media, fans were over the moon. Many even took to Twitter to react to the news.
"Did you see the rumor that Warner Bros wants Lady Gaga as a female Joker. I think the world needs that," one tweeted.
Another fan even daydreamed about Gaga delivering her greatest performance in Joker 2.
The fan wrote, "The year is 2026. I am seated for Joker 2. Lady Gaga has given the greatest performance of our lifetime as Harley Quinn. Light eminates from my body."
"I ascend above the theater. We have reached peak cinema," the tweet further read.
Darren Mooney, a film journalist, also shared his thoughts on the casting news, saying that if Gaga is cast in Joker 2, the most interesting thing about the movie would be the "method acting" discourse about a female lead in a blockbuster.
That being said, no official source or the creators of the film has confirmed Gaga is the new cast member of the Joker sequel.
Is 'Joker 2' Confirmed?
Like Gaga's casting news, the sequel for Joker has also not been announced by the creators.
However, various outlets have claimed that the production of the sequel is moving forward, and the filming for it will reportedly start in 2023.
According to Heroic Hollywood, an insider reported that Warner Bros. has officially received the first draft of the sequel recently. "...and the film will begin shooting sometime in 2023," the report stated.
Since the 2019 film, Joker has only made a few smaller-scale appearances, including Jared Leto reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime in Zack Snyder's Justice League cut.
Another rumor also suggests that the character could make an appearance in Robert Pattinson's The Batman.
Joker, released in October 2019 in the United States, was directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver.
The film starred Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, and others, along with Phoenix.
