As a 15-year-old, Carrie began learning guitar lessons from her then neighbor Jeremy Enigk, an American songwriter and vocalist. That set a path for her music career.

While studying in Evergreen State College, she formed a rock band with the label Excuse 17, which played a significant role in Third-wave Feminism, with her fellow students. She also formed another band named Sleater-Kinney, which became a key part of American Indie Rock scene.

Brownstein was born on 27 September 1974 in Seattle, Washington but was raised by her parents in Redmond, Washington. Her father was a corporate lawyer whereas her mother was a teacher. They got divorced when Carrie was just 14, with her father getting her full custody.

Carrie studied at Lake Washington High School as a child before attending The Overlake School for higher studies. She later graduated from The Evergreen State College in 1997 with majors on 'sociolinguistics.'

Comes Out As Bisexual (Lesbian/Gay)

The talented musician was declared to be bisexual to the whole world while she was just 21 years old by Spin, an American Music Company.

In 2006, in an interview with The New York Times, she admitted publicly of being gay. To further solidify the questions about her sexuality, she put all the queries to rest after admitting she is definitely bisexual in a 2010 interview for Willamette Week. She said:

 "It's weird because no one's actually ever asked me. People just always assume, like, you're this or that. It's like, 'OK. I'm bisexual. Just ask."

Before coming out as gay, she reportedly dated her band member Corin Tucker for a short period before splitting up. Brownstein was also linked with fellow Portlandia co-star, Fred Armisen whom she first met in 2003.

The former Excuse 17 guitarist was also rumored to have dated Taylor Schilling in 2015, an American actress known for her portayal as Piper Chapman on the Netflix original comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black, whereas Abbie Jackson in 2016However, she never confirmed any of her relationship with those celebs.
