In an interview with AVCLUB back in 2016, he clarified about his sexuality and gracefully thanked the rumor mill for acclaiming him as gay. He stated,

I heard that I was gay before, and I was like “Really?” And then I started thinking: You haven’t really made it unless somebody says you’re gay. And I was like, “hm.” [Laughs.] “I’m not gay, but thanks for the rumor!”

However, Cole is as straight as an arrow.
