‘The Suicide Squad’: A Reboot for the Band of Antiheroes and Director James Gunn
2016's Suicide Squad was a major disappointment with viewers and critics giving it a bad score. However, things are looking good for DCEU fans with the release of The Suicide Squad.
However, The Suicide Squad isn’t a second chance for just the antiheroes at Suicide Squad but also one for director James Gunn. After being fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in 2018, this is his comeback movie and fans are already interested in knowing if he will direct another DCEU movie.
Why Was James Gunn Fired?
Guardians of the Galaxy is a much-loved franchise in the MCU and a huge part of the movie’s success lies in Gunn’s directing. However, the director was fired from the franchise in 2018 after his Twitter posts between 2008 and 2011 surfaced.
The tweets made jokes about topics like pedophilia and rape, evoking a powerful reaction from many people. Gunn apologized for his tweets, calling them his failed attempts at trying to be provocative.
My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not funny at all, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.
This wasn’t the first time he had apologized for his jokes as he had been doing so since 2012. However, this is the first time he had to face big consequences like being fired over them.
A Good ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie?
The original Suicide Squad received uninspiring reviews, with many pointing out that the PG-13 rating was holding it back. The new The Suicide Squad, however, does not have this problem. An R-rated movie, the new sequel has already received positive reviews from critics.
Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the movie, called The Suicide Squad the GOAT of superhero films when talking to Access.
Honestly, even if this movie wasn’t as incredible as it is, it’s still worth going to the theater because it’s so nice to be able to go to a movie theater again. But it just so happens that this is arguably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comic book film ever made.
With the movie being R-rated, Jai Courtney shared with Cinemablend that Gunn had pushed the envelope with violence and humor, but also the heart and the soul. He also added that though The Suicide Squad had less nudity than the previous Suicide Squad, what was captured on camera was a little more adult.
Also, stars like John Cena, Idris Elba, and Sylvester Stallone joining the cast and portraying characters like the crazy Peacemaker or King Shark shows some promise.
