Inside Chris Brown’s Joint Custody of Daughter Royalty with Nia Guzman
Chris Brown and his baby mama Nia Guzman treaded choppy waters following the birth of their daughter, Royalty Brown. The pair was never in an actual relationship. Brown was still dating actress Karrueche Tran when the aspiring model got pregnant after their whirlwind romance.
She gave birth to Royalty on May 27, 2014. Only after the delivery, Brown knew that he had become a father. Upon the revelation, he took responsibility for his daughter and fought for her custody.
Chris Brown's Legal Battles for His Daughter
Brown and Guzman were locked in legal battles over child custody and expenses for years. Initially, Guzman withheld custody from Brown over financial disagreements soon after the birth of their baby girl.
The duo took the matter to court, and the judge ruled they share joint custody. The court also decided Royalty could use her father's last name and spend time with both of her parents.
As per the agreement finalized in September 2015, Brown needed to spend 12 days per month with his child. In addition, he had to pay Guzman $2,500 a month in child support while supporting his daughter's schooling, health insurance, medical bills, and nannies.
Then, in 2018, the duo got into a major disagreement regarding child support. Guzman had filed a request on August 15, 2017, to increase child support, and the court raised the amount to $5,000 in September 2018.
Meanwhile, the 'Nostálgico' singer poured his displeasure regarding the judgment, claiming that "providing a 4-year-old with everything she demands could be harmful and is not in her best interest."
In his documents, he added he was already paying Guzman $6,000 per month for Royalty's education, medical needs, and a nanny. The 32-year-old admittedly paid extra for child support and expenses for travel, entertainment, and extracurriculars. Then, for the agreement, he conformed to pay $9,813 per month.
But after around a year, Guzman accused Brown of failing to pay child support. She claimed he didn't pay her the amount ordered by the court and didn't give her the value of housing he agreed to supply.
The 38-year-old alleged Brown repeatedly ignored deposition notice, court hearings, and settlements offers, increasing the cost of litigation. The two of them have apparently put their differences to rest, co-parenting their seven-year-old in the best way possible.
Brown Co-parents Daughter with His Baby Mama
The famed rapper publicly reunited with Guzman to attend their baby girl's soccer game on March 8, 2020. Guzman posted pictures from the day on her Instagram stories.
Two days after the game, a close source to the couple told HollywoodLife that the pair had made their daughter their top priority.
Chris gets along great with Nia because they decided a long time ago to make things work for the sake of Royalty.
The source added that Brown had matured leaps and bounds after Royalty's birth, and he considered her the most important girl in his life. For her, he "is willing to do whatever it takes to show her how much her parents love her and that she sees how well they get along."
True to the reports, the pair has been co-parenting their daughter. Their Instagram accounts suggest she splits time between both of them.
Besides Royalty, Brown has a son named Aeko Catori with his girlfriend, Ammika Harris. As for Guzman, she has two other daughters. She gave birth to her youngest one, Sinatra L.A., on June 25, 2019.
