Laura Ruth Harrier was born on 28 March 1990 in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Evanston, Illinois along with her parents and younger brother. Her mother is a speech pathologist and her father works in insurance; she considers her parents as her role model.

She attended Evanston Township High School. Later she enrolled at New York University but deferred due to her involvement in modeling. With a towering height of 5’9 inches as she delved into modeling, she soon realized she was more into acting. Choosing acting for her career, she then attended William Esper Studio.
