Gayle initialized her journalism career working as a reporter and weekend anchor at WDAF-TV. She also worked at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Md., and WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C.Â

Later in 1981, she was hired as a television news anchor for WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut which is a CBS affiliate. She contributed 18 years of her life there while also hosting her syndicated daytime program.
Gayle also co-hosted NBC's daytime talk show called Cover to Cover, with Robin Wagner in 1991 but unfortunately, the show got canceled after 13 weeks. Later in 1997, she was offered her talk show, The Gayle King Show, which aired only for a season.

Eventually, King then went on to join 'O, The Oprah Magazine' which is her best friend Oprah Winfrey's Magazine, as an editor-at-large in 1999. She has also worked as a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show and Good Morning America.Â

Meanwhile, in Septemeber of 2006, she revived The Gayle King Show and began to host it on XM Satellite Radio. Later in 2011, she hosted the show on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

Despite her successful career, Gayle has not enjoyed prosperity in her marital life. She was married to an American attorney, William Bumpus in the year 1982. Their relationship lasted for 11 years as they got divorced in 1993.

In July 2016, in an interview with Vanity Fair the veteran CBS host opened up about her failed marriage upon recalling the infamous incident dated almost three decades ago where she caught her husband cheating on her. She slammed her husband saying:
"I was married to a cheater... I went to marital counseling. I have been divorced since 1993, so I'm all healed and everything. I have worked it out. I'm not bitter. I'm OK.
In response to this, William apologized to Gayle via a statement to Page Six saying:Â
"I have been haunted with this life-altering choice...Though I have dealt with this privately … I publicly apologize for the major transgression that dramatically changed all of our lives."
William even put on words of praise for his ex-wife stating that she has his utmost respect even labeling Gayle as a great wife, an excellent mother and a fantastic co-parent. Hopefully, these words will soothe the tension between the two in the future.Â
