Kate Winslet has never been shy about talking about her personal life, although she limits what she shares. Her love for her husband is not one of the things she is hiding.

The actress, who has been married to her third spouse, Edward Abel Smith, since 2012, is always gushing about him. Even though their romance began with a house fire, it has never really burned down.

She talks about him and their family life at every good chance she gets, so much so that a few people have even found her swoonings a bit too much.

Kate Winslet’s Husband Is an ‘Extraordinary Life Partner’

There have been many instances where Winslet has spoken of her husband in high regard. However, in none of them was she more thorough in his praise than in her May 2021 interview with The New York Times.

Winslet had no qualms about detailing why she found Smith to be near-perfect. She pin-pointed a few things, beginning with his name change.

Smith, who went by the quirky name of Ned Rocknroll from 2008 to 2019, changed his name in 2019. In his change, he added 'Winslet' as one of his middle names.

He did so "simply because the children have Winslet" and when the family travels together, "to all have that name on the passport makes life easier." Apparently, filling up medical forms, too, was easier with a conventional name.

Smith was the "superhot, superhuman, stay-at-home dad" she could rely on when she was out working. And when at home, he took care of her and everyone else.

"He is an absolutely extraordinary life partner," Winslet gushed. "I’m so, so, so lucky."

Winslet met Smith in the most bizarre of circumstances — a house fire. In 2011, when she was spending her holidays at Richard Branson's estate in Necker Island, a house caught fire. The details about the chaos are not available, but it brought the two together.

That was just before she attended the 2011 Emmys. She immediately knew she was going to spend the rest of her life with him.

She immediately fell so in love that she was out of whack at the Emmys.

"I was just so in a whirlwind of having just met him that I couldn't even concentrate," she told People in September 2021. "I vividly remember making an absolutely appalling speech because I was not on planet earth because I had fallen head over heels in love with this person who I just met."

Smith initially had his reservations. According to Winslet, he was not too keen on marrying someone famous. But, those reservations evidently went away.

Winslet and Smith got married in December 2012 after getting engaged that summer. In 2013, they welcomed their son, Bear Blaze.

That 'Blaze' in Bear's name comes from the fire that the couple survived in 2011.

It's not just the family stuff Smith is great at. Despite being dyslexic, he still helps her with her script. "It’s so hard for him to read out loud, but he still does it," she said. He even taught their son how to read while she was busy with Mare of Easttown.

Kate Winslet’s Previous Relationships and Children

Before marrying Smith, Winslet married twice.

Her first marriage was with Jim Threapleton, which lasted from November 1998 to 2001. They had a daughter, Mia, in 2000.

Then, soon after separating from Threapleton, she met Sam Mendes, whom she married in May 2003. Their son, Joe, was born a year later.

After a lot of tabloid talks and gossip, which even made her relocate to New York for over 10 years, their marriage ended in 2011. They separated in 2010 after rumors of his affair with Rebecca Hall.

Mendes is now married to Alison Balsom. As for Winslet, who calls herself "third time lucky," she is hoping to hold hands with Smith for the rest of her life.
