Naked and Afraid is an outdoor survival show that belongs to a whole other genre of reality television.

While certain portions of the survival reality shows are staged, pre-planned, or just performed under expert supervision, sometimes they depict fatal conditions in which regular people may not survive even for a day.

Mishaps, accidents, and even fatalities have occurred while filming a few survival shows. But has it happened on Naked and Afraid

Has Anyone Died on 'Naked and Afraid?'

Naked and Afraid is a rigorous Discovery Channel reality show in which players are forced to survive in the wilderness on their own for 21 days.

They must survive without clothing and can only bring one useful personal item with them. Aside from that, they must survive in the woods by finding food, shelter, and water.

Although the survivalists have the option to leave, the risk they face with their lives makes the audience wonder if it's all worth it.

Some fans have wondered if a participant has ever died on the show because of the harsh conditions out there.

The answer is no. There have been no deaths on Naked and Afraid.

However, there have been a few instances where the contenders, such as Manu Toigo and Samantha Ohl, came close to losing their lives.

Some 'Naked and Afraid' Participants Almost Lost Their Lives

In 2013, Manu Toigo was bitten by a mosquito while shooting an episode of Naked and Afraid

In a 2013 interview with TMZ, she revealed she didn't think much of the bite at the time, but when she returned to Los Angeles, she started getting excruciating headaches and nosebleeds.

Toigo’s condition deteriorated so much that she could not stand on her own. Her family rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with dengue hemorrhagic fever.

The Naked and Afraid alum was admitted to the hospital for two weeks and eventually recovered. Despite her near-death experience, she stated she wouldn't change anything about her experience.

“Most epic experience I could ever have done,” she shared.

Samantha Ohl was perhaps the most recent contender to have a near-death experience. She was clearly weakened after being caught in a thunderstorm while filming the season 8 episode ‘Stone Cold.’

She refused to share her body heat with her companion Adam. By the time he summoned help, Ohl had developed stage two, or moderate hypothermia, and could not feel her extremities.

According to the 2017 reports from Yahoo!, the paramedic on the scene was concerned that Ohl's organs would shut down. Fortunately, he could transport her to a hospital on time.

Ohl was brought back to health with no long-term consequences. During her recovery, she said, "My kids will see, you know, Mom did it."

She continued that the last section was too much for her body to bear. She was looking forward to high-fiving Adam and telling him, “We did it.”

Do ‘Naked and Afraid’ Participants Get Paid?

Whether the competitors on Naked and Afraid are paid has been debated for a long time.

According to the show's official description, the sole award is their pride and sense of accomplishment. The former cast members have also revealed in interviews that they are on the show for the experience and to prove to themselves that they can survive in the wild.

In a 2015 interaction with Channel Guide, the show’s casting director Kristi Russell was asked if there is a prize for individuals who finish the challenge. “There is no prize,” she clarified.

How the Participants Are Reimbursed

Russell noted the candidates are reimbursed for their time even though there is no prize money. According to her, they are paid a monthly stipend to compensate for their missed pay.

They would also be provided round-trip airline tickets to the survival challenge venue. The candidates would also be given $5000 in cash, according to the regulations of Naked and Afraid, which were published in 2014.

Considering the fact that the candidates also risk their physical and mental wellbeing, the network only casts challengers who are physically fit for the survival challenge.
