Although Asa Butterfield's character in his latest Netflix hit Sex Education has nothing to hide, the actor is not the most forthcoming about his personal life when the cameras are not rolling.

After sleuthing through the internet and then some, it can be stated with reasonable certainty that The Space Between Us star is single as of this time of writing.

Asa Butterfield's Dating History

According to the Instagram deep-dive conducted by Elle magazine, the young actor's last known public relationship was with former co-star Ella Purnell. 

Butterfield and his girlfriend had worked together for the movie Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, a fantasy-adventure movie released in 2016.

However, the duo was seen together for the last time on April 5, 2016, on the then-boyfriend's Instagram feed.

The outlet also briefly mentioned a rumor that the Ender's Game star was dating Nina Dobrev at some point in 2017. 

Then again, because of the nine-year age gap between the two, Dobrev being the senior, the outlet was quick to dismiss the dating possibility. 

Asa Butterfield's First Girlfriend

Butterfield has been acting since he was a little boy.

He joined a drama group. Young Actors Theatre in Islington, at the age of six. So it comes as no surprise that he met his first girlfriend on set.

He also disclosed that the girl was one of the supporting actresses, and it was a fleeting relationship. 

"But, y’know, it’s all experience, part of growing up," he added. 

Asa Butterfield Is a Romantic

Not much else is known about Butterfield's current dating status. However, during the promotion of his movie, The Space Between Us, he admitted he was somewhat of a romantic.

That being said, he repealed the thought of being "mushy" and "soapy" in the name of romance. 

Further along in the interview, his co-star Britt Robertson claimed he was on online dating platforms.

But that lie was short-lived because Butterfield couldn't tell the difference between swiping right and swiping left on Tinder.

Asa Butterfield Is a Netflix Superstar

In his breakout hit show on Netflix, Sex Education, created by Laurie Nunn, the actor played a preternaturally wise teenager who does what he can to educate his peers on the ins and outs of opposite-gender interactions. 

During his conversation with The Guardian, the actor admitted he was not entirely sure of how the audience would perceive the show when he signed up. He believed that the script was interesting, yet risky. 

Naturally, he hoped that the show would resonate with the audience and would be talked about. Still, he had not foreseen the show connecting so instantly and so overwhelmingly with that many people. 

According to the data collected by the streaming platform, his show made it to over forty million households within the first month of its release back in 2019.
