Born on 26 January 1973, Walter Kamau Bell was raised in Alabama, Boston to working-class parents. His father, Walter Bell served as Alabama’s Insurance Commissioner and his mother, Janet Cheatham Bell founded a self-publishing firm.

Currently, he is hosting the CNN documentary series, United Shades of America, which first premiered in April 2016 and rebooted in 2017 for the third season. In 2017, the show won the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Unstructured Reality.
