Robin Roberts and Long-time Partner Amber Laign Are a Match Made in Heaven

The world was unaware of Robin Roberts' romantic preference and her partner until she came out of the closet while sharing about her major health scare.

The big day was on December 30, 2013. The famous Good Morning America host took to Facebook to celebrate the one-year anniversary of her bone marrow transplant. She posted a picture that was taken 100 days after the procedure and wrote, "Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today..when I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post-transplant."

In the post, she went to thank God, her sister, her entire family, and one special person — her long-time girlfriend, Amber Laign, a licensed therapist. 

When Did Robin Roberts and Amber Laign Start Dating?

Roberts and Laign started dating back in 2005.

The pair was actually set up by their mutual friends. And they were not very interested in the blind date initially. They canceled the date twice before their friends, Alex and Bert, left no option for them to back out again.

Finally, they met, thinking they would just get some drinks, but the meetup ended up transforming into a long dinner date. Then they went on their second date, which only intensified the spark between the duo. 

Soon, they ended up dating, embarking on what has now become a long, beautiful journey, spanning over 17 years.

2020 Pandemic Fortified Their Relationship

Roberts's relationship with her partner has always been sailing smoothly. And it has a lot to do with the affection and support they have for one another.

"She’s very, very supportive and she’s been right there beside me every step of the way," Robin raved about Laing in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in 2014. She recalled how she stood beside her, supporting her in times of peril. 

Such challenging times have only made their relationship stronger. For instance, when the 2020 COVID Pandemic struck the world, the lovebirds found more time to spend with each other. 

"We spent more time together this past year than in the previous 15 years combined," the television presenter told people, adding that they had never been stronger.

Robin Roberts Supports Amber Laign amid Cancer Battle

While the power couple has been living the best dating each other, the challenges never seem to stop coming their way.

On February 24, 2022, Roberts took to Twitter to share that her wife-like girlfriend was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2021. Giving more details, she said, "She had surgery last month and this morning will begin chemotherapy. Thankfully, the prognosis is good."

She explained she would take some breaks from GMA to help her partner deal with chemotherapy, just like she had done when Roberts was fighting cancer. And she did it selflessly. 

Laign completed one of the important phases of cancer treatment — radiation — on July 18, 2022, after a brief suspension of treatment because of complications in April. 

Roberts shared the joyous news on Instagram, posting a video of her partner ringing the ceremonial bell at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In the caption, she wrote they were grateful for all the well wishes and prayers from their followers.
