Shonda Rhimes Doesn’t Want a Husband in Her House — Here’s Why
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes does not want to get married.
The TV producer, screenwriter, and author previously opened up about never wanting to have a husband in her life.
When talking to Oprah Winfrey on Super Soul Sunday back in 2015, Rhymes shared she always knew she wanted to be a mother but had never wanted a husband.
Since I was 5, I knew I was going to have kids. I could tell you I was going to have three. I could tell you they were going to be girls. But I have never wanted to get married.
Rhimes realized she didn’t want a husband during her Year of Yes, an entire year where she challenged herself to agree to every invitation that came her way.
She was seriously dating at the time but decided to come out and say how she felt regarding marriage.
Rhimes had never wanted to get married and had felt like she was the odd one for the same reason for a long time.
However, when she finally spoke about it with her family, she described the liberating moment as being “fantastic.”
She also added that now if people asked her if she wanted a husband, she could confidently reply saying, “Nope, looking for a boyfriend, not a husband.”
Shonda Rhimes Has Three Children
Though Rhimes does not want a husband, she isn’t averse to the idea of having kids. In fact, the showrunner is a mother to three children, all daughters.
Of the three children Rhimes has, the two older ones — Harper Rhimes (born 2000) and Emerson Pearl Rhimes (born February 1, 2012) — are adopted. Her youngest daughter, Becket Rhimes, was born in September 2013 via surrogacy.
Rhimes announced the birth of Becket via Twitter on September 19, 2013.
Been AWOL from Twitter. I totally have a good reason: TINY HUMAN #3 is here and she's perfect! Babies are good. Life is good. #2shows3kids — shonda rhimes (@shondarhimes) September 18, 2013
When talking about her children with Good Housekeeping, she revealed they were just all very stubborn.
They couldn’t be more different from one another, but they’re all stubborn — and I mean that in the best way. No one will ever take advantage of them. They will always go their own way because they have decided they’re going to.
Rhimes further added that she preferred having a stubborn girl over a nice one. She also shared that stubbornness was a trait her younger self also possessed back in the day.
