Mel Brooks is a veteran of the entertainment industry with a career spanning over seven decades. He is famously known as a creator of broad farces and parodies that are considered among the best film comedies ever made.

Mel Brooks Published His Memoir in November 2021

The famed actor, who was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010, apparently spent much of the pandemic working on his memoir.

Describing the book, The Guardian's columnist Hadley Freeman stated that the memoir, published in November 2021, was "as sparkling and delightful" as one would expect from Brooks.

It was reportedly full of "great advice, such as how to get a studio head to give you more money for your film (catch them off-guard in the bathroom), and memories from the making of his gold-plated classic movies."

On the other hand, it was also full of ghosts because everyone he mentioned in his book had already passed away.

That includes his wife Anne Bancroft, close friend Carl Reiner, TV star Sid Caesar, Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder, comedian Dom DeLuise, and filmmaker Buck Henry.

Mel Brooks Talks about His Memoir

In an interview with Freeman, Brooks opened up about his memoir and the writing experience during the pandemic.

He first shared that his son Max, who has written The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, was the one who suggested he should utilize his free time to write down all his life's stories.

"When I look back at people like Gene, who I loved so much and miss so much, and my adventures with Carl — you met him, you saw what a sweetheart of a guy he was, my best friend — and, of course, my wife who was my great love and support, it was hard to keep going sometimes," he stated, admitting it was painful at times to write about his past.

At the time, Brooks also spoke with AP News and explained that he always identified himself as a writer besides actor, filmmaker, and producer.

As per him, writing was the most interesting thing he did in his life, and he believed him being a good reader helped him become a good writer, too.

How Old Is Mel Brooks?

As of this writing, Brooks is 95 years old. He was born on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York City.

He lost his father — his family was Jewish from GdaÅ„sk, Poland — due to kidney disease when he was only two.

The Hollywood star was later raised by his mother along with his three older brothers in the Brooklyn tenement.

In 1964, he married his wife Bancroft, with whom he welcomed their son Max in 1972. He was married to her until her death in 2005.
