Kate Siegel is no stranger to horror, having appeared in several scary movies and series. Interestingly, most of these movies were made with her writer-director husband, Mike Flanagan, who has a penchant for all things paranormal like Seigel.

In 2013, Siegel appeared in the horror movie Oculus as Marisol, a ghostly woman who haunts the protagonists. The movie was written and directed by Flanagan. Their second project was Hush, which was released in 2016.

They also released Ouija: Origin of Evil in the same year and Gerald’s Game in 2017.

But the couple’s biggest collaboration so far has been Netflix’s anthology series, The HauntingThe Haunting of Hill House is the first part of the series in which Siegel starred as Theodora, aka Theo. The actress returned for the second part, The Haunting of Bly Manor, as Viola Willoughby.

Despite working on all these projects, the first time the couple met was for a different movie.

Kate Siegel And Husband Mike Flanagan

During her interview with Collider, while promoting their latest film, Midnight Mass, Siegel spoke about meeting Flanagan for the first time.

During the conversation, Siegel shared that she realized her husband brought the best out of her as an actor on the first day they met. The actress and the director met in 2011 during an audition for a film of his that didn’t end up getting made.

Siegel recalled that she loved the script so much she was prepared and eager to do whatever was necessary to bag the role. She explained that she auditioned and did all nine script pages, but Flanagan just looked at her and sat there for a second.

Flanagan then asked her to do one more, and she agreed, waiting for Flanagan to give her some directions. But instead of giving her some pointers, he just went, “Can you just do one just for you?”

She was stumped when she heard that because she did not know what he meant. But something struck her, and at that moment, she got the courage.

And something in me was brave enough to take the amount of time, which felt like an eternity, was probably two minutes, and figure out what it was that I wanted, and my acting changed forever on that day.

Kate Siegel and Mike Flanagan’s Marriage and Kids

The movie, unfortunately, did not happen, but the filmmaker reached out to Siegel to play Marisol in Oculus

Flanagan called her up and told her he really wanted to work with her and promised that he would reach out to her for future projects if she agreed, and she did. In the years after, Oculus, Flanagan, and Siegel started dating before marrying in early 2016.

The couple kept their wedding pretty intimate and private. Currently, they have two children together. Their first child, Cody, was born in 2016, while their second, Theodora, was born in 2018.

Flanagan also shares a son, Rigby Flanagan-Bell, with his first wife, actress Courtney Bell.

You can watch the couple’s latest release, Midnight Mass, on Netflix.
