Elijah Wood has always kept his personal life on the down-low. He has had many partners over the years and now has a baby with his current girlfriend.

However, it's the story about how Wood and his once-girlfriend, Franka Potente, fell in love but couldn't be together, the most interesting in his private private life.

The former couple fell in love while shooting a movie. But things went south after failing to create the bubble that caused them to fall in love during the project.

How Elijah Wood and Girlfriend Franka Potente Fell in Love

Wood and Potente first met on set when they were cast on 2002's coming-of-age comedy-drama, All I Want (also known as Try Seventeen). They had a short-lived but deep relationship for a while.

During a couple of interviews with German magazines Focus and Bunte in December 2003, he provided some insights into how they struck up a connection and how it eventually fizzled out. Especially in his interview with Bunte, he went into a lot of detail about their relationship at the time.

"When we met at filming first time, I got struck by lightning," Wood said of his former girlfriend and their initial moments together. But they had broken up by the time the interview took place.

They still kept in touch, though. And she even visited him in LA when he had his appendix removed.

Joking about how she, too, had her appendix removed shortly before the interview, he quipped, "What does this mean? Doesn't matter."

Then he gushed about why he fell for her.

"She is very beautiful. She is a very good actress. She is unique," he told Bunte. "I was most impressed by her independence. She has a strong character and she is witty, without attempting to appear witty."

Potente being German helped, too. Wood found her openness to certain things and their cultural differences fascinating.

Wood admitted they had a delightful time together but then talked about why things didn't work out between him and his ex girlfriend.

The Lord of the Rings actor confessed it was the first time he had fallen in love with a co-star and that it was not such a great idea.

"Because you spend many weeks shooting it's as if you are in a time-bubble," he said. He had fallen for Potente within that bubble, and there was no reality check.

"I fell in love with Franka in a slightly surreal world at that time," he added and said when they returned to reality, "everything was different."

They tried to recover the scenarios they had within that bubble and failed. "We were together for two months, something that wouldn't have happened readily in so called real life. It was just surreal," he clarified.

He also assured everyone reading that the relationship's failure was in no way related to her as a person.

Elijah Wood’s Partners and Love Life — A Timeline

"I will likely remain single forever," Wood said at the end of the interview, about which he was not right. He got into a relationship soon after this interview.

In 2005, he started a relationship with his now-ex girlfriend, Pamela Racine. They had a good run but eventually broke up in 2010.

In September 2010, outlets reported that Wood and Racine had split. The reason behind the split was Wood's unwillingness to settle down with her.

Just a year later, though, he gave an interview where he said he would love to get married and start a family one day. However, the conversation also mentioned that he was in no rush to do so.

Then, in 2017, he met his current girlfriend, Danish producer Mette-Marie Kongsved. They worked together on I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore in 2017 and made their relationship public in January 2018.

The summer of 2019 brought engagement rumors about them when she was spotted wearing a ring on her left hand. However, Wood continued to call her his 'girlfriend' during talk show appearances and interviews.

Wood and Kongsved realized they would be parents on Christmas Eve 2018. And as Us Weekly confirmed on February 19, 2020, the pair quietly welcomed their first child together.

As of July 2020, the couple thrived on frozen pizza, and he had a personal life comprising collecting records, occasional DJing, watching movies they had not watched yet, and, of course, raising their child.
