Born in July 1971, Benedict Wong is a British actor renowned for his roles as Kublai Khan in Netflix's Marco Polo, Bruce Ng in The Martian, and Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Doctor Strange.

Interestingly, he shares his name with another celebrated Hollywood star, Benedict Cumberbatch. Because of that, a few people also seem to be confused if Wong and Cumberbatch are the same people.

That is, however, not the truth!

Wong and Cumberbatch are clearly not the same people. And if you follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe closely, you'd know Cumberbatch very well.

Also an English actor, Cumberbatch is hugely known for portraying Dr. Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He has, thus, starred in Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

How Are Benedict Wong and Benedict Cumberbatch Related?

Even though Wong and Cumberbatch are not the same person or blood-related, they have a few other connections that bind them together.

For instance, both English stars play a prominent part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were first roped in together for Doctor Strange in 2016.

As stated earlier, Cumberbatch was cast to play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats; while Wong played the role of Wong, the librarian of the hidden temple and sorcerer training grounds of Kamer-Taj.

The two shared an extended time together on the screen in the film, and fans loved their chemistry, too.

Wong later served with Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange as guardians of the New York Sanctum and fought with the Avengers against Thanos during Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame.

The actor's other important appearance occurred in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where it was confirmed that Wong is the current Sorcerer Supreme instead of Doctor Strange.

The character of the actor with Asian roots has several abilities, including performing healing duties, assisting in occult matters, and being knowledgeable in martial arts.

Benedict Wong Speaks about Relationship between Wong and Doctor Strange

The duo is now set to appear on the big screen again with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will be released on May 6, 2022.

During the promotion for his upcoming film, Wong even talked about the relationship between his character Wong and Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange.

"I call it Phase Wong. It's a nice, interesting shift. Wong has taken on a new role, and that dynamic changes between them [Wong and Strange] both," he shared while jokingly changing the name of the MCU's Phase 4.

Fans are, therefore, very excited to witness the dynamic between Strange and Wong's shift, now that the sidekick has become master, and Strange has to deal with iterations of himself from across the multiverse.

With that, Wong becomes an integral part of the narrative more than ever, as his calm, steadfast demeanor and intellect will prove to be an asset while dealing with the terrors of the multiverse.
