Alanis Morissette Dealt with Weight Issues Due to Break up and Eating Disorder
Over the years, Alanis Morissette has been in the spotlight largely for her contribution to the music industry. But there is also an irrelevant topic associated with the famed singer-songwriter that often makes headlines: her weight issues.
After every flop song, break up, or unglamorous snap, the first thing tabloids have targeted is how she has suffered weight-wise. She indeed has had issues with her weight, which she has occasionally admitted publicly as well.
Here's a rundown of her weight gain gossips over the years and how she has reacted to them.
2009: Alanis Morissette's Weight Gain after Break up
Morissette and actor Ryan Reynolds were in a relationship for five years between 2002 and 2007 after they first met at Drew Barrymore's birthday party in 2002. The ex-couple had also announced their engagement in June 2004.
But things suddenly went south when the reps for both stars confirmed they had decided to end their engagement and relationship. The breakup subsequently took a toll on the Flavors of Entanglement musician's weight, who started living on ice cream and donuts.
A few outlets even named her weight gain, saying she was in a kind of "food-inflicted hibernation." But she eventually got over that after more than a year.
In 2009, Morissette was snapped sweating it out in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on a steamy afternoon. Covering the news, the NY Daily News reported she was performing lightweights, biking, swimming, kickboxing, and dancing.
2013: Married and Diet Plans
After getting over her breakup, Morissette found love in rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, whom she married in a private ceremony at their Los Angeles home on May 22, 2010.
Three years into marriage, she already had a son, born in 2010, but still managed a healthy physique. In May 2013, she even showed off her curvy figure in a revealing swimsuit during her vacation with her husband.
DailyMail at the time revealed that she went on from eating "Italian food at two in the morning, drinking wine and margaritas" to following a vegan diet to stay fit. With her diet, she reportedly lost 20 pounds.
Today, she is still married to Treadway and has three children together: the second child, a daughter [born in 2016], and the third child, another son [born in 2019].
2015: Alanis Morissette on Her Eating Disorder
With her change in lifestyle and inspirational story, Morissette was asked about her weight loss transformation when she sat down with Women's Health Magazine in August 2015.
"...with food, you have to eat, so how can one go from, in my case, bingeing and purging, starving, overeating, the scale going up and down—how can I go from that to a 'sober' approach?" she said of her eating disorder.
But she implied she somehow found a way to approach food with a new mindset and thought about the way it could not only heal her but provide her with the energy to continue doing the things she loved.
2021:Â A Victim of Multiple Statutory Rapes as a Teenager
In September 2021, the famed singer also came out with her story of being the victim of multiple statutory rapes as a teenager. She revealed the details while speaking in a new documentary, Jagged, which was first screened at the Toronto film festival this week.
It took me years in therapy to even admit there had been any kind of victimisation on my part. I would always say I was consenting, and then I’d be reminded like ‘Hey, you were 15, you’re not consenting at 15.’ 'Now I’m like, Oh yeah, they’re all paedophiles.' It’s all statutory rape.
But she did not identify the alleged abusers, stating she tried to tell those things previously to a few people, but it only fell on deaf ears.
