Charlotte Flair might have followed her father’s footsteps with a career in WWE, but she certainly does not wish to remain in his shadows.

Flair returned to WWE after a sabbatical because of a shoulder injury. Upon her return, she was involved in a storyline with her dad, Ric Flair, and fellow RAW star Lacey Evans.

In a recent interview with The Hindustan Times, Flair revealed that she wasn’t a fan of the storyline centered on Flair’s frustration with the budding on-screen relationship between her father and Evans.

She expressed her disappointment and stated that her plans to start afresh were slashed when she had to share the screen with her father.

“I am Charlotte Flair now, I am no longer Ric Flair’s daughter. That’s Charlotte’s dad. I was like why do I have to be on TV with my dad?” she iterated.

On Paving Legacy

Flair is dead set on carving her own path. The wrestler revealed that her decision to not seek help from her father was difficult.

She mentioned that interviews always revolved around how her father helped her out and she was tired of it.

The truth was, Her dad was never present to teach her or watch her until she was already 2 years deep into the business.

She admits that her father was unaware of how the women’s division worked, which is why she had to put in all the work herself.

When I was starting out, I had no clue what I was getting into, so all the inner workings, the politics, the culture we have, the traditional things behind the curtain, I did not know. People assumed I’d know.

On May 29, 2014, Flair captured the attention of the WWE Universe after becoming the new NXT Women’s Champion.

In the following months, Flair defended her title as she defeated one challenger after another. This cemented the women’s division as being one of the most competitive branches in all of sports entertainment.

Flair made her debut on Raw and became the first athlete to win the Raw Women’s Championship.

She was also the first newcomer to win the Divas Title and eventually became the first woman to not only main event a pay-per-view but also win the match.

On Her Relationship with Her Father

The champion wrestler has steadily been getting closer to the all-time record currently held by her father, who had won 16 World Championship titles during his Hall-of-Fame career.

Ric, or rather The Nature Boy, is running for the greatest wrestling showman of all time and has a WWE career spanning 40 years.

In a revealing dual memoir, Second Nature: The Legacy of Ric Flair and the Rise of Charlotte, readers noted that Ric's career took precedence over his family and his traveling schedule paired with rockstar party antics often raised questions regarding the kind of father he was.

However, Flair believes her dad was too critical of his parenting and wrote that he provided for the family, often brought her lunch to school, and built a relationship with her that many parents wouldn't.

She described him as her best friend, one who would answer her phone even at 3 a.m.

Meanwhile, Ric wrote that he couldn’t be prouder of his daughter's exceptional WWE career so far.
