Emmy Rossum is a mom!

On May 25, The Shameless alum announced on Instagram that she had given birth to her first child with husband Sam Esmail the day before.

One photo showed the actress baring her baby bump, while another showed Esmail cradling her belly. She also posted a picture of what appears to be her newborn’s footprint.

Immediately after announcing the birth, her comments section was flooded with congratulatory messages from other celebrity moms like Jessica Szohr and Shay Mitchell.

Her Shameless co-star Isidora Goreshter commented three hearts, while Storm Reid wrote, “CONGRATULATIONS.”

Keeping a Secret

The news of Rossum’s birth came as a surprise to many fans because no one knew she was pregnant. The Phantom of the Opera actress and her producer husband kept their pregnancy a secret from the public, with photos of Rossum only from the waist up in recent months.

But now that the secret was out, Rossum shared more photos of her pregnancy, which had not been revealed previously. The actress posted another black-and-white photo of herself posing by a window taken 2 weeks before her daughter was born.

The pregnancy also explains why she didn’t make a guest appearance in the series finale of Shameless on April 12Executive producer John Wells told TV Line that although there was a concerted effort to feature Rossum one last time, the COVID restrictions made it impossible.

Meanwhile, Rossum’s husband hasn’t posted about his new father status on social media yet and it is highly likely he won't either. The producer’s last post in July 2020 clearly sums up how he feels about social media.

Last year, a peer pressure group comprising fed-up Facebook users and community organizations banded together to pressure the networking site to stop letting lies, hate, and disinformation spread on their platform.

Esmail, too, felt strongly about it and vowed not to upload anything until Facebook made serious changes.

Making a Marriage Work

Although the couple seems to use social media differently, they are on the same page when it comes to making their marriage work. The Day After Tomorrow star and the Mr. Robot creator got engaged in August 2015 after two years of dating and tied the knot in May 2017.

The actress opened up about how she and Esmail made their marriage work in an interview with Extra TV in September 2017. She explained that as much as they are both committed professionally; they are also equally committed to their relationship.

We text multiple times a day, all day long, send little videos back and forth on set, try to share as much of our lives as we can so we don’t feel that disconnect.

The actress then gushed about how happy and lucky she was.
