Ebony Obsidian’s 'Sistas' Season 3 Premiered on June 9 — Here's What We Know So Far
Actress Ebony Obsidian is excited about the third season of Tyler Perry’s Sistas. Obsidian, who plays Karen Mott, one of the four leading women in the hugely popular BET show, has made several posts about the show.
On June 9, 2021, the actress took to Instagram, right before the third season’s premiere, to talk about it.
A few days later, she once again shared a short trailer for Sistas while writing a synopsis for the season in the caption.
First Show To Complete Shooting During A Pandemic
Perry is known for completing shoots for his shows under insanely short timeframes.
And when it came to the second season of Sistas, he added one more thing to the list of memorable things about it — the first completed season of a TV series produced entirely during Covid.
Obsidian revealed the cast and crew referred to the shooting as camp quarantine.
She also added that it went by so fast, she hadn’t come to terms with it. She also expressed that shooting during quarantine was a little spooky and beautiful at the same time.
The Sistas star shared it felt like they were making history, not only because of them being the first season to wrap up filming, but also because of the history behind the houses they were shooting at.
The houses were military houses, I believe. Mr. Perry gave a speech at the BET Awards, and he said this was a land dedicated to keeping African American people down, imprisoned, enslaved… It’s kind of like rewriting over some dark times with some really, really bright and beautiful times.
Season 3 Began Shooting While Season 2 Was Still Airing
Sistas enjoyed brilliant success from its very first season.
According to Deadline, it is BET’s No.1 series among Black viewers aged between 18 and 49.
Both seasons 1 and 2 boast the best rating on the cable for the same demographic.
Given the show’s popularity, it’s not surprising that it was renewed for a third season, just months after the shooting for the second was finished.
Season 2 premiered on October 14, 2020, and concluded on March 31, 2021. As for the third season, it premiered just two months after the ending of the second season.
Professional And Philanthropic Works
While Sistas is Obsidian’s most known work, she has also been involved in multiple other well-known productions, including Tough Love (2015-2018), If Beale Street Could Talk (2018), Wu Tang: An American Saga (2019), and Hunters (2020).
And on top of her professional work, the actress is also passionate about philanthropic efforts.
She was named an IRC Ambassador and has taken initiatives to help and support refugees.
Obsidian shared what got her into helping others with 1883 Magazine.
I’ve always been someone who is constantly questioning my community. Even when I was younger, just being from another daughter of an immigrant family… what I learned is that a lot of who I am is always wondering how I can be of use to something bigger than myself.
Her parents' connection to refugees and circumstances aren't the only thing that drives Obsidian to help others.
She started learning about herself and her community from a young age and says working with IRC has given on opportunities to learn while bringing positive changes to many lives.
