Cate Blanchett on Discussions with Her Children — From Climate Change to Social Media
Along with her acting career, the Academy Awards-winning actress Cate Blanchett has simultaneously managed her personal life with her husband Andrew Upton, a screenwriter, over the years.
The couple has been married for over two decades now — and shares four children together: three sons and one daughter.
Their kids are Dashiell John Upton, born in 2001; Roman Robert Upton, born in 2004; Ignatius Martin Upton, born in 2008; and Edith Vivian Patricia Upton, adopted in 2015.

With most of them still very young, the actress and her husband often have a huge task on their hands to keep a work-life balance.
Cate Blanchett Has Regular Conversations with Her Children
Speaking with Net-A-Porter in November 2021, Blanchett implied that she had a good relationship with her children. She said she was able to maintain a good bond because of their regular conversations.
She continued to share that she and her children had discussions on various topics, including the good and bad aspects of social media. Safe to say that this mother likes to keep a hands-on approach when it comes to raising her kids.
“Because so much of our so-called information comes through social media. I’m old enough to have been taught at school what a primary, secondary, and tertiary source is,” she stated.
The Lord of the Rings star further said that she always asked her kids to check the authenticity of the news or information before sharing it on their social media.
And even though her children rolled their eyes after she told them such things, she felt they sounded responsible when she heard them talk to their friends.

In addition, Blanchett shared she loved to speak with one of her sons who was studying physics and philosophy.
“...he is really interesting to talk to about [technology]. I don’t want to become a separated generation, because I also feel responsible for the landscape he is about to emerge into as an adult,” the actress added.
Another interesting — and sensitive — topic that she discussed with her kids was climate change. She said she briefed the little ones on how they could safely go out to protect themselves from the hazardous atmosphere.
Meanwhile, she also lacks confidence while talking about that since “it’s a TERRIBLE conversation to have with your 13-year-old, isn’t it?”
Presumably, such engaging conversations from Blanchett make her a good and careful mother to her kids.
How Cate Blanchett and Her Husband Balance Work and Personal Life
In a July 2020 interview with Radio Times, the legendary actress revealed that she had a “perverse attraction to chaos,” as she and her longtime husband regularly took on more pressure than they could handle.

She then shared that her way to deal with chaos or balance work and personal life was by surfing into the pressure “until it’s been going on for six months.”
“...and then you burst into tears,” she added.
In addition, she stated her strong union with her husband made the couple strong and helped them manage happy work and personal life.
The couple, who are from Australia, currently lives in East Sussex with their four children.
