Bob Woodruff Made The Foundation After Life-Threatening Accident

Life was going fine for the ABC News correspondent, Bob Woodruff, until he went to Iraq as ABC News’s lead foreign correspondent in January 2006. He took the journey to cover news on the transfer of power between the U.S. and Iraqi security forces.

But, on January 29, 2006, his armored vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb near Taji, Iraq.

Though alive, Woodruff sustained a traumatic brain injury in the accident. Initially, the military medical professionals took care of him and, days later, shifted him to the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, United States. Only after being in the hospital for 36 days in a medically-induced coma, Woodruff started to recover.

And while he was recovering in the medical center, he got to realize the pain of war-injured veterans and their families. Understanding a need for a helping hand in such trying times, Bob and his wife decided to establish a foundation to help the ill and wounded veterans, service members, and their families.

They eventually established the Bob Woodruff Foundation in 2006.
